100 HRDs Research: Coaching Down the Line
This report is the third in the ‘100 HRDs’ series and reflects the findings of questionnaires completed by 100 HRDs from a variety of industry sectors, organisation types and sizes.
The topic for this research was ‘Coaching Down the Line’; we wanted to gain an understanding of the extent to which day-to-day people management issues are handled by Line Managers, rather than by HR, and the impact that this has – and could have, if ‘Coaching Down the Line’ was embraced more widely – on the Line Managers themselves, on HR teams and on the business as a whole.

Measuring the ROI of Coaching
We conducted this research among HR directors and managers who attended or expressed an interest in attending the Full Potential Group specialist forum on Driving a High-performance Coaching Culture, during 2006.
For this research we wanted to examine what the future holds for coaching, so we looked at how big a part coaching plays in overall HR strategy, to what extent organisations are formally measuring the ROI of coaching and the ways in which the ROI of coaching is generally assessed. On the basis of these questions we were able to quantify the average ROI of a quality coaching intervention.

Embracing High-Performance Culture
We conducted this research among 65 HR directors and managers who attended or expressed an interest in attending the Full Potential Group specialist forum, Driving a High-performance Coaching Culture, during Autumn 2005.
We wanted to find out whether organisations understand what it means to truly develop and integrate a high-performance coaching culture throughout a business, and the extent to which this is happening. We were also interested to learn about the obstacles that HR professionals face in gaining buy-in to the concept, and to the practicalities of implementing a high-performance culture within UK organisations.
